In 1967, the Philadelphia Flyers were among 6 new teams to enter the NHL, along with the California Seals, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota North Starts, Pittsburgh Penguins, and St. Louis Blues. This expanded the National Hockey League from it's “original six” hockey teams (Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, and Chicago Blackhawks) to 12 NHL teams.

Even though the Flyers were an NHL expansion team, it didn't take them long to make a mark in the National Hockey League. In 1973-74 (just 6 years later after entering the league) the Flyers became the first non “original six” team to win the Stanley Cup (they won it again in 1974-75.)

The Flyers NHL hockey team was not only good at scoring goals and playing defense. The early Flyers teams also loved to brawl. They like to fight so much, that the Flyers teams from the early to late 70s became known as “The Broad Street Bullies”, with guys like Dave Schultz and Bobby Clarke (the youngest player to be selected as captain at that time.)

The 1980s is fondly remembered by many Flyers fans as the Ron Hextall Era. In 1986, Hextall brought a youthful swagger, excitement (and goaltending skill!) back to the team as he went on to win the Vezina Trophy for best Goaltender in the NHL (the third Flyer to win it after Parent and Lindbergh.)

From the late 80s into the 90s, Flyers fans got a chance to watch some of the NHL's best players wear the Flyers home and road jerseys, including: Rod Brind'Amour (acquired from the Blues in 1991), Mark Recchi, Peter Forsberg, Mike Ricci, and Eric Lindros just to name a few.

Today, the Philadelphia Flyers continue to be an NHL powerhouse with forwards Danny Briere, Mike Richards, and one of the deepest defensive unit in hockey, featuring Chris Pronger, Matt Carle, Braydon Coburn, Andrej Meszaros, and Kimmo Timonen.
