The Pittsburgh Steelers joined the NFL in 1933 as the Pittsburgh Pirates, and played their home games at Forbes Field. In 1940, founder Art Rooney changed the team's name to the Pittsburgh Steelers to pay homage to Pittsburgh's steel industry and workers.

During the 1943 season, so many players went off to fight in World War II that the Steelers temporarily merged their team with the Philadelphia Eagles to form the Phil-Pitt “Steagles”. In 1944, the Steelers merged with the Chicago Cardinals for a year.

In 1969, the Pittsburgh Steelers finished off their NFL season with a horrible 1-13 record. But there was one good thing that came out of that: because of their horrible record, the Steelers got the first overall pick in the 1970 NFL draft, which they used to draft Hall of Fame quarterback, Terry Bradshaw. In 1971, the Steelers picked up Jack Ham. Then in 1972, Franco Harris joined the team.

That year, the Steelers finished the 1972 season with an 11-3 record. One of the most memorable moments in Pittsburgh Steelers history came in their first playoff game at Three Rivers stadium where Franco Harris made the “Immaculate Reception” in the final minute of the game to beat the Oakland Raiders and win their first NFL division title.

In 1974, the Pittsburgh Steelers won their of 6 consecutive AFC Central National Football League titles and won their first trip to the big game in Super Bowl IX against the Minnesota Vikings, 16-6. Then next year, the Steelers finished 12-2 and became third team in NFL history to win back-to-back Super Bowls, when they beat the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl X. After a few average seasons, the Steelers made history again in 1978 when they beat the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XIII to become the first NFL football team to win 3 Super Bowls. And the Super Bowls didn't end there. The very next year, in 1979, the Steelers made history again when they won Super Bowl XIV to become the only NFL team to win 4 Super Bowls. It's no wonder the Steelers were nicknamed the “Team of the Decade” for the 1970s!

In 2001, the Steelers opened their brand new arena, Heinz Field, where they went on to win their first playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens, 27 to 10, before losing to that year's eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

In 2004, the Steelers set another NFL record by becoming the first AFC team to win 15 games in a season. 2005 started off slowly for the Steelers, but the football team rallied together to win three straight road playoff games that year (a feat no other NFL team has ever done) en route to their 5th Super Bowl against the Seattle Seahawks.
