The New York Jets football team began in 1960 as the New York Titans of the NFL's rival league, the American Football League. In 1963, the team was sold to a group led by Sonny Werblin for $1 million. After the sale, the team's name was changed to the Jets after the airplanes that flew over Shea Stadium, located near New York's LaGuardia Airport.
In 1965, the New York Jets made one of the biggest deals in football history, when it signed Alabama prospect, and future Hall of Famer, Joe Namath for $427,000 (a huge amount of money at the time.) This created a huge stir in the American professional football landscape, because up until that time, the AFL wasn't considered a true competitor to the NFL.
Before Joe Namath signed with the Jets, the AFL was considered a lower quality football league than the NFL... a place where old players went before retirement, or when they couldn't make it on an NFL team. But that all changed when Namath began playing for the AFL Jets. Namath went on to win the AFL Rookie of the Year title as the Jet's quarterback, passing for 2,220 yards and throwing 18 touchdowns.
And even though the Jets finished the 1965 season with a losing record (5-8-1), the fact that an AFL team signed the talented and popular Joe Namath worried NFL owners that more college players would be lost to the AFL like they lost Joe Namath. So the NFL agreed to hold a joint college draft, and later agreed to play the AFL in a championship game every year, which would become the Super Bowl.
In 1968, Joe Namath led the Jets to an AFL Championship win against the Raiders, which earned them the right to represent the AFL in the AFL vs NFL Championship game - the first year the big game was officially called the Super Bowl. That year, the Jets were a huge 18 point underdog vs the Baltimore Colts, but the Jets took a 10-0 lead by early in the second half, and held off Johnny Unitas' late game drive and beat the Colts 16-7, the Jets' only Super Bowl Championship thus far.
Today, Jets NFL football fans have a lot to cheer about with talented players like Tony Richardson, David “Hitman” Harris, Bart Scott, Brian Thomas, Jason Taylor, Calvin Price, and many other great football players who are passionate about winning another Super Bowl for New York Jets fans!
