Even though the Baltimore Ravens NFL team has only been playing football since 1996, they've already experienced some great success...

In 1995, the owner of the Cleveland Browns NFL football team announced that he planned to relocate the team to Baltimore. His announcement created a huge issue within the league, which came to a conclusion in February of 1996. Modell reached an agreement with the NFL and the city of Cleveland, that allowed him to relocate the NFL team to Baltimore, and keep all his existing player contracts while still being call a new expansion team by the league. In exchange, the city of Cleveland was allowed to keep the Browns name, team colors, team records, and retain the city's association with the Cleveland Browns Hall of Fame players, as well as get a new Cleveland Brown NFL team (the new Cleveland Browns team reemerged in 1999.)

After Art Modell relocated the football team to Baltimore, he launched a contest so fans could help name their new NFL football team. They chose Ravens in reference to the poem “The Raven”, by the famous writer Edgar Allen Poe, who lived in Baltimore several times throughout his life.

In the 1996 NFL Draft, the Ravens drafted Jonathan Odgen with their first pick ever (4th overall), and Ray Lewis as their second pick (26th overall.) The Ravens opened the 96 season on a high note, winning their opening game against the Oakland Raiders, but struggled the rest of the year to finish the regular season at 4-12. That year, Ravens wide receiver Michael Jackson ended up leading the NFL with 14 touchdown catches.

1997 was a great year for Peter Boulware who was credited with 11.5 sacks and earned the AFC Defensive Rookie of the Year award. That year, Rod Woodson joined the team, and Priest Holmes rushed for 1,000 yards.

In 2000, the Baltimore Ravens, led by Ray Lewis, Jamal Lewis, Sam Adam and Rod Woodson finished the season strong to end with a 12-4 record, and their first trip to the NFL Playoffs. The Ravens beat the Denver Broncos in a Wild Card game, then beat the Tennessee Titans. The Ravens beat the Oakland Raiders in the AFC Championship game, then went on to beat the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV and become one of only 4 teams to win the Super Bowl on their only trip to the Championship Game.
