The Philadelphia 76ers basketball team began in 1937, but not in Philadelphia, or as the 76ers. The team started as the Syracuse Nationals of the National Basketball League (NBL), where they played for over 25 years, until 1963 when Irv Kosloff and Ike Richman bought the basketball team, moved them to Philadelphia, and changed their name to the 76ers.

Midway through the 1964-1965 NBA basketball season, the 76ers made one of the most important trades in team history when they traded Paul Neumann, Connie Dierking and Lee Shaffer to the Warriors, for NBA Hall of Fame legend Wilt Chamberlain. The 76ers continued to play better basketball over the next few years as new players and coaches were brought in to the team.

It didn't take long for the 76ers and Wilt Chamberlain to make their mark on the NBA. In 1966-1967, the 76ers won 45 of their first 49 games and finished the regular season with a 68-13 record, and then going on to win the NBA championship. In 1980, that team, featuring Chamberlain along with Walker, Cunningham, Jackson Greer, Jones, Guokas, Melchionni and Costello. That 76ers basketball team was so dominant that in 1980, the NBA voted the 1966-1967 76ers the best basketball team in NBA history up to that point.

In 1976, new owner Fitz Eugene Dixon payed $6 million dollars to signed Dr. J (Julius Erving) one of the most recognized 76ers basketball players who revolutionized the game with his amazing slam dunks, creative offensive skills, and off-court demeanor who led the team until he retired in 1987, after scoring 18,364 as a 76ers, making him the third highest scorer in team history behind Hal Greer and Dolph Schayes.

In 1984, the Philadelphia 76ers added 6 foot, 6 inch Charles Barkley one of their most popular players in team history who energized the team with his dominating rebounding skills for 9 seasons, before being traded to the Phoenix Suns after the 1992-1993 NBA season for Jeff Hornacek, Tim Perry, and Andrew Lang.
