Formed in 1883, the Philadelphia Phillies MLB baseball team are the oldest, continuous franchise in all of professional sports to play in one city with one name. The original team that became the Phillies began when the Worcester Ruby Legs baseball team was disbanded, and the National League moved the franchise to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Phillies played their first baseball game on May 1, 1883 at Recreation Park against the Providence Grays.

The Phillies have had a long history in Major League Baseball, and some great players have proudly worn the famous Phillies cap and jersey as they took the field to play the game we love so much. Charlie Ferguson (the first “star” for the Phillies) pitched the Phillies first no-hitter baseball game in 1885. First baseman Ed Delahanty was considered the first great hitter on the Phillies. Delahanty won MLB baseball's batting title in 1899, batted over .400 three times, and finished with a .346 career batting average – the fourth highest in Major League Baseball history.

Fast forward almost 100 years from the formation of the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team to the 1980s, and you enter what many consider the Phillies best MLB season up to that point. In 1980, the Phillies won their first Major League Baseball World Championship... the same year that the Phillies captured their first National League pennant in 30 years. The 1980s had an amazing roster of baseball players, including Mike Schmidt, who led the league with 48 home runs, 121 RBIs and was named the leagues Most Valuable Player in 1980. Steve Carlton also won the Cy Young Award that year with an impressive 24 and 9 record, Then there was Lonnie Smith (baseball's 1980 Sporting News Rookie of the Year) Manny Trillo, Garry Maddox and Bob Boone, just to name a few other Phillies greats.

Today, the Philadelphia Phillies continue to dominate Major League Baseball. The Phillies ended the 2010 season with the best record in franchise history. That season featured many great moments, including Roy Halladay pitching the twentieth perfect game in MLB baseball history. The Phillies also had one of the top three starting pitching rotations in baseball with Halladay, Oswalt and Hamels.
