The New York Yankees baseball franchise started in 1903, and played under the name the “Highlanders”, because their stadium was situated on one of the highest spots in the city of Manhattan. It was in 1913 the the New York Highlanders changed their name to the New York Yankees, after moving to a new stadium they shared with the New York Giants NFL football team.
Over the past 100 years, the New York Yankees have had some very memorable events and Hall of Fame Major League Baseball players. On April 24, 1917, George Mogridge became the first Yankee pitcher to throw a no-hitter at Fenway Park. On January 3, 1920 the NY Yankees purchased Babe Ruth's contract from the Red Sox for $125,000, plus a $350,000 loan. Then, on April 18, 1923, the New Yankees played their first game at Yankee Stadium. Babe Ruth hit the first home run in Yankee Stadium history on that date.
The Yankees MLB baseball franchise has had such a long and storied past, it's almost impossible to include every statistic and notable event... Among some of the biggest moments in Yankees history are:
On June 1, 1925, Lou Gherig begins his streak of 2,130 games played consecutively. Babe Ruth hits his 60th home run on the last day of the 1927 season to break his own previous record. On June 3, 1932, Lou Gehrig became the first MLB baseball player (and only Yankee) to hit 4 home runs in one game. November 21, 1934, the Yankees buy Joe DiMaggio from the Seals for $50,000. Lou Gehrig's playing streak ends on May 2, 1939, after playing 2,130 consecutive games. Or in 1939, when his jersey uniform #4 was the first to be retired by Major League Baseball.
And that's just before 1940! In 1953, Micky Mantle hits what ESPN calls the greatest home run of all time in Major League Baseball history. 3 years later, Don Larsen pitched the only perfect game in a World Series game on October 8, 1956...
Fast forward to the 1980s and 1990s, and you're reliving Reggie Jackson's career as Yankee, and seeing Dwight Gooden's eighth no-hitter in Yankee history. On October, 2000, the Yankees won their 26th MLB World Championship against the New York Mets, and on and on...
So many great moments in Yankee baseball history... we've had the chance to watch great Yankee players like Roger Clemens, Derek Jeter, and Don Mattingly just to name a few in addition to the Yankee legends you've already ready about.
