The Boston Red Sox are one of the oldest Major League Baseball teams, having been founded in 1901. And fans didn't have to wait long for success. The Red Sox won the first World Series held in 1903 vs the Pittsburgh Pirates, and went on to win four more World Series baseball championships by 1918 with baseball legends Cy Young, Jimmy Collins, Chick Stahl, and Buck Freeman.
After achieving early glory, the Red Sox had to wait 86 years before winning their 5th World Series title, which some attritube to the “Curse of the Bambino” which (as the story goes) began when the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1918.
Fast Forward to the 2004 season, and the Red Sox are looking primed to make a run at MLB glory again. Curt Schilling and Keith Foulke joined the team, and later that year, fan favorite Nomar Garciaparra and Matt Murton we sent to the Chicago Cubs as part of a four team trade that brought the Red Sox Doug Mientkiewicz from the Twins, and Orlando Cabrera from the Expos.
In 2004 MLB playoffs, the Red Sox beat the Anaheim Angels, then faced their long-time rivals, the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. The series started horribly for the Boston Red Sox, who went down 3 games to 0 in the best of 7 series. No team had ever won 4 straight games after being down 3 to 0 in the series... but then, the Red Sox came back to win games 4-7 and join the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, 1975 New York Islanders, (and now, the 2010 Philadelphia Flyers) as the only pro sports teams in history to win a best-of-seven series after losing the first 3 games.
The Red Sox went on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals and win the 2004 World Series that year to cap off an amazing year in Boston Red Sox baseball history.
